Chelsea have an agreement in place with Romelu Lukaku to sever ties with the striker as Tottenham eye up a deal for the ace. Lukaku joined the Blues for the second time in 2021 but has flopped since returning to Stamford Bridge and spent the last campaign on loan at Inter Milan.
Chelsea shelled out a staggering £97.5million to secure the services of Lukaku from Inter under the Roman Abramovich regime after selling him to Everton seven years before. The Belgium international started his second stint at the club in fine form as he found the back of the net four times in his first four outings.
But his form soon nosedived and he ended his maiden season back in west London with just 15 goals in 44 matches. And Blues chiefs shipped him back off to Italy, where he helped Inter reach the Champions League final last term.
According to Calciomercato, Lukaku has now held preliminary talks with Tottenham about a move across the capital, although the Lilywhites aren’t going all in with an attempt to land the out-of-favour frontman. And the player’s huge wages could potentially cause issues for Spurs, who have been trying to balance the books this summer to ensure they don’t fall foul of Financial Fair Play rules.
Juventus and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have also been linked with Lukaku this summer. And Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has explained that he has no plans to reintegrate the 30-year-old back into his squad at Stamford Bridge.
“It is not only one side – it is two sides needed to find the best solution,” Pochettino said. “You cannot put it only on the club, it is about both sides. The situation is where it is because of both sides. Both sides have arrived at an agreement.”
