Opta shares eye-opening stat on where West Ham United should be in Premier League table this season

West Ham, who had a solid start to the season, are the biggest overperformers in the Premier League, according to Opta.

The sports analytics firm published an article on its website on Wednesday (18 October) demonstrating that the Hammers should be significantly lower in the league standings than their current seventh-place standing, as their predicted number of points would place them in 14th.

Everton, who are now 16th in the Premier League, should be as high as fifth based on their predicted points through the first eight games of the season. This is a sharp contrast to Everton.

Clinical

The statistics demonstrate West Ham’s superior clinical ability this season as they scored 15 goals in their first eight games, moving them up to seventh place in the Premier League standings.

David Moyes will aim to build on the gains gained at the beginning of this season over the next few weeks. He would much prefer hear that his team is performing better than expected.

Stats continue to have an increasing influence on the game, but they shouldn’t be treated as gospel and the Hammers shouldn’t try to change too much.

While the Opta analysis notes that the Irons have only recorded an average of 37.4 per cent possession this season, it’s important to highlight that they have faced Chelsea, Brighton, Manchester City, Liverpool and Newcastle already – all of which are sides that tend to occupy more of the ball.

There is a chance the game against Aston Villa on Sunday (22 October) could be played out in a similar fashion, but the main thing is that we go out there and take our chances to try and earn the three points.

In other West Ham news, the club’s “top spy” has handed in his notice at the London Stadium.
