Social media users have taken issue with Fikile Mbalula’s statement that Siya Kolisi’s appointment as Springbok captain was ultimately a result of his efforts as Sports Minister.

Siya Kolisi, the Springboks’ captain, just guided the squad to consecutive Rugby World Cup victories. He is only the second player to accomplish this accomplishment, behind the legendary Richie McCaw, and the Boks are only the second team to retain the Webb Ellis Cup, following the All Blacks in 2015. Then head coach and current director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, chose Kolisi to be the Springbok captain in 2018.

Many social media users have praised Rassie Erasmus for his extraordinary devotion and commitment to change with the Springbok team over the past few days. Mbalula, however, objected to and publicly refuted one such opinion on Wednesday.

Rugby fans are aware of the difficulties black players encountered due to their designation as “Qouta players.” However, Rassie Erasmus’s presence ensured that selection is based on merit alone, regardless of skin color. He merits all the praise, tweeted X under the handle @Tabile_Zukile.

Mbalula, who is presently the ANC Secretary General and served as Minister of Transport from 2019 to 2023, Minister of Sport from 2010 to 2017, and Minister of Police from 2017 to 2018, replied as follows:

“You see Siya as the captain, but I understand your point and completely agree about your assertion about Rassie. It was not Rassie who did away with quotas; it was me because they were counterproductive. We entrenched the Transformation Charter.”

MBAKS KICKED TO THE CURB BY SOUTH AFRICANS

Social media users were quick to shut him down and shut him up for his hot take.

One said: “I think this is an even better example of that ‘There are two kinds of leaders’ meme. Claiming credit where none is due. Rassie on the other hand, takes no credit. Doesn’t lift the trophy. Wheeps quietly. Gives others the credit.”

Another added: “This bruddah is quite possibly one of the worst humans ever born. My dawg SARU (SA Rugby) was on the brink of BANKRUPTCY when you were minister of sport???”

“It’s giving: ‘I made Siya Kolisi… I’m the reason the Springboks are back to back champions’. You truly can’t outgrow main character syndrome.”

“Not this fool trying to claim responsibility for the culture within the springboks camp. These ANC politicians are shameless,” another said.
