ESTIMATE WHO RETURNS? RASSIE’S HEAD
Nienaber’s departure as Springboks coach to join Irish club Leinster following the 2023 Rugby World Cup was long confirmed.
Since then, there has been much conjecture about the identity of the next Springboks head coach. More recently, there have been rumours that Rassie Erasmus, who guided South Africa to the 2019 World Cup title and was instrumental in the team’s victorious title defense under Nienaber in 2023, may be making a comeback to the position.
Erasmus told the Sunday tabloid Rapport in his first interview following the Springboks’ World Cup victory in France that he will assume leadership and is already making plans for a potential three-peat in 2027.
While Nienaber was leading the Springboks, Erasmus was SA Rugby’s Director of Rugby. In this capacity, he was in control of the rugby team and regional competitions, including as women’s and age-grade rugby, that were under the SA Rugby banner.
