How the Springboks’ coaching staff will look in 2024!

Springboks Rassie Erasmus World CupFollowing the Rugby World Cup in 2023, Jacques Nienaber, the head coach of the Springboks, and Felix Jones, the assistant coach, accepted offers from Leinster and England, respectively.

It is commonly believed that Rassie Erasmus will now take over as head coach once more in Nienaber’s absence, at least going forward, but this has not yet been verified.

It is necessary to hire a new coach in this area because Nienaber oversaw the defensive unit of the Springboks. Notably, there has been discussion about Duane Vermeulen, a Bok great, taking this post.

There could also be one new face as a replacement is sought for Jones, although there is a possibility this role could be absorbed by someone like Stick.

Possible Springboks coaching team for 2024:

  • Rassie Erasmus – Head coach
  • Mzwandile Stick – Assistant coach
  • Deon Davids – Assistant coach
  • *TBD – new coach to replace Jones – assistant coach
  • Daan Human – Scrum coach
  • Duane Vermeulen – Defence coach
  • Andy Edwards – Head of Athletic Performance

Contract extensions

Stick, Davids, Edwards, and Human have extended their contracts for an additional four years, meaning they will play for the squad until the end of the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027. This was confirmed earlier this year.

Under the direction of SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus, whose services are contracted through at least the end of the 2025 season, they will carry on with their responsibilities.

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer said, “We are delighted to announce that Mzwandile, Deon, Daan, and Andy have signed contract extensions that will see them remain with the Springboks until the Rugby World Cup in 2027.”

“Under Rassie’s direction as Director of Rugby, they have all advanced as a coaching group, and I have no doubt that the stability of our coaching staff will benefit the Springboks in 2023 and the upcoming seasons.

Given their outstanding performance over the last six years, it was our goal to keep all of the present coaching staff on board. and we’re happy that the majority of them have decided to stick with the team.

“Rassie’s services are contracted through at least the end of 2025, and plans are still underway to confirm a successor in the title role of Springbok coach.”
