Michigan entered the 2023 season with an opportunity to three-peat as Big Ten Champions and were able to accomplish the goal, beating Ohio State for the third straight season followed by a win over Iowa to take the conference yet another time. 

Offensively, Sherrone Moore’s group was led by a deep, talented unit that could end up producing double digit picks in next April’s NFL Draft. Offensively, quarterback J.J. McCarthy has the country’s top 1-2 punch at running back with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards along with an outrageously deep offensive line group that has as many as ten starting caliber players on it according to offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore. Add in two veteran receivers and a high-ceiling tight end unit and the Wolverines established themselves as one of the nation’s top overall offenses.

Defensively, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter got great contributions from stars at cornerback (Will Johnson), safety (Rod Moore), linebacker (Junior Colson) and defensive tackle (Kris Jenkins, Mason Graham) along with a very talented edge group led by veteran Jaylen Harrell and high-ceiling players like Derrick Moore and Braiden McGregor.

Harbaugh was able to reflect on the Wolverines’ third straight conference title as they head to the College Football Playoff for the third straight year as well.

“Yeah, just as you would expect. Just a great thrill of victory, wonderful, wonderful feeling of winning. It’s what we dreamed about, what we hoped for, what we’ve worked for, what our guys prepared for.

“Get in position; put yourself in position, to be in position to win it all.

“We’ve accomplished many of our goals, and now winning it all is what we had also put on the goal sheet. That’s what we’ll turn our one-track mind to, to this next opponent and playing Alabama in the Final Four, and we’ll do what we always do. We’ll play, we’ll prepare, we’ll practice, and get ready to give it our very best.”

Michigan will meet Alabama for a chance to play in the National Championship game on New Year’s Day on ABC.

Michigan DB Makari Paige reflects on 2023 season, West Bloomfield teammate Semaj Morgan

Michigan safety Makari Paige stepped into a larger role with the Wolverines in 2023, emerging as an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection for his play throughout the conference slate.

The fourth-year player joined Sam Webb on 1050-AM The Michigan Insider last weekend during Blake Corum’s toy drive to reflect on his season so far, offer his impression of Semaj Morgan — a former teammate at West Bloomfield — and briefly preview Alabama.

Here’s what he said:

Makari Paige on his 2023 season so far:

I feel like it’s going real good. Most importantly, we’ve been winning big games, good games to help us get to the point we are right now. The most important part about the season right now is to keep winning games.

On the veteran depth in the Michigan secondary:

We got a lot of older guys, a lot of guys that have been there for a minute. They know the game plans — they’re veteran guys. One man goes, down next man up — for real, for real. The job is to keep the standard the standard. That’s our group as a whole.

On his reputation for big hits and physical play:

I’ve getting in the box a little bit more, putting my nose on stuff the past two seasons. It’s part of the game. As a safety, you’ve got to be able to come down there and get in the box. I feel like it’s something I like doing.

On Semaj Morgan’s playmaking and big personalty:

When he first came to campus, he’s Maj. He’s gonna be him. I try to like tell him like, chill out a little bit! But he’s gonna be him; that’s what makes him him. That makes him the way he is — and he’s a dawg. You can’t really stop that. You’ve gotta let him be him. He’s making plays, too, so you can’t tell him nothing. Let him do him.

… He’s been that way since high school — literally he’s been the same way. You can’t change that if he’s been that way that long. Can’t change that. It’s definitely a key part in a successful team. You gotta have that.

On what he’s seen on film as he prepares for the Rose Bowl against Alabama:

They got a good team. I won’t say too much — they’ve got a good team, though. We do too, though.
