The upcoming Sunday showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears in the regular season finale carries significant weight for the Packers as they seek to secure their playoff destiny in the NFC North.

Unfortunately, the Packers will have to face this pivotal game without the presence of their running back, A.J. Dillon, who has been ruled out due to a stinger injury, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Dillon’s absence from the game and also mentioned that wide receiver Christian Watson, who is dealing with a hamstring issue, is questionable for the match despite not participating in practice.

This marks the second game that Dillon will miss this season, with his previous absence stemming from a broken thumb suffered in Week 15, and now, a stinger injury incurred in Week 17.

Throughout the season, the 25-year-old Dillon has managed to accumulate 613 rushing yards and contribute two touchdowns to the Packers’ offensive efforts, maintaining an average of 3.4 yards per carry on 178 attempts.

In their season opener, the Packers secured a victory against the Bears, during which Dillon rushed for a total of 19 yards on 13 carries.

With a win against the Bears this week, the Packers can potentially look forward to Dillon’s return for the wild card round of the playoffs.

According to ESPN stats, Mayfield enters the weekend ranked ninth among qualified signal-callers with a 95.9 passer rating, tied for fourth with 28 touchdown passes and eighth with 3,907 yards through the air on the season. As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Mayfield third among the betting favorites at +1300 odds to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award for the campaign. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin topped the list at -275 odds at that time.

Blackhawks acquire veteran winger in wake of major injuries

The Blackhawks have added some extra depth up front, acquiring winger Rem Pitlick from Pittsburgh in exchange for a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick. Both teams have announced the swap. Pitlick spent the previous two seasons with Montreal before being included as part of the three-team swap which also involved San Jose, landing the Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson. The 26-year-old impressed as a waiver claim by the Canadiens in 2021, picking up 26 points in 46 games. That was enough for Montreal to give him a two-year, $2.2M contract, seemingly giving him some stability. However, Pitlick cleared waivers last season, splitting the year between AHL Laval and Montreal where he had just 15 points in 46 contests, leading to a trade request, one that was granted with his inclusion in the three-way trade. However, the change of scenery didn’t work out quite as planned for Pitlick. Pittsburgh’s cap situation helped land him back on waivers and since clearing at the end of training camp, he has played exclusively with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Pitlick has been productive down there, notching 24 points in 32 games to lead the Baby Pens in scoring. Presumably, Pitlick will now get an NHL look with a team where the salary cap situation won’t be a concern. The Blackhawks announced Connor Bedard and Nick Foligno have been placed on IR, so Pitlick should get an opportunity to make an impact with Chicago. A strong second-half showing could give him a nice boost heading into unrestricted free agency this summer, just like it did two years ago.

The Washington Wizards are reportedly open to trading Kyle Kuzma ahead of the February 8 trade deadline. The 28-year-old has been with the franchise since 2021 and has become a core part of the team’s rotation. However, during the summer, the Wizards entered a full-scale rebuild, trading away Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Kuzma could be the next veteran to leave Washington, D.C. The franchise has reportedly informed teams around the NBA that they’d be willing to part with their star forward for “multiple first-round picks.” “The Wizards have informed rival teams they’re open to trading veterans in search of future draft assets for Washington’s rebuild, sources said. Early impressions are the Wizards hope to receive multiple first-round picks for Kuzma, with the goal of receiving maximum draft capital for other players down their roster as well,” Fischer reported. Kuzma is enjoying a strong season for the Wizards. He’s averaging 22.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, shooting 46.8% from the field and 35.7% from 3-point range. However, he’s enduring one of the worst defensive seasons of his career. According to “Dunks and Threes,” Kuzma is a career-low -2.4 in defensive estimated plus/minus, and while that number is affected by the teammates around him, it could give teams a reason to try and lowball the Wizards. Still, given his versatile skill set and how he has flourished as both a secondary and tertiary option for Washington, there will likely be multiple contending teams interested in adding him to their rotation. The Wizards are clearly looking to stock up on draft assets and take a methodical approach to rebuilding their roster. With so many teams expected to be buyers heading toward the trade deadline, it will be interesting to see whether anyone moves to acquire Kuzma and, if so, where he ends up.

Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh hilariously dodges question about his future

As head coach Jim Harbaugh and the No. 1 Michigan Wolverines prepare for the College Football Playoff Championship game on Monday against No. 2 Washington, he would likely prefer to answer questions about his current team. But amid rumors that Harbaugh is interested in a return to the NFL, not to expect questions about that would be naive. Rather than cause a stir by answering one way or the other about his plans, he instead hilariously dodged the question. “I’ll gladly talk about the future next week,” Harbaugh said. “I hope to have one. How about that?” If Harbaugh does decide to return to the NFL after Monday night’s championship game — as his hiring of agent Don Yee (whose client list includes Broncos coach Sean Payton and Tom Brady) indicates, he’ll have plenty of suitors with many job openings expected in this coaching cycle. Perhaps the most attractive landing spot for Harbaugh is with the Los Angeles Chargers. The team perennially underperformed with head coach Brandon Staley, wasting the abilities of quarterback Justin Herbert despite the talent surrounding him. With competent leadership, perhaps Herbert and the Chargers could finally develop into the AFC contenders they were supposed to be. Harbaugh also reportedly showed interest in taking over in Carolina for the Panthers, who were far and away the worst team in the NFL in 2023. They also have a young quarterback in 2023 first overall draft pick Bryce Young who would certainly benefit from Harbaugh’s mentorship. But the players at skill positions in Carolina are much less inspiring than those at Herbert’s disposal, and at the moment, seems unlikely that meddlesome owner David Tepper is willing to surrender the amount of control that Harbaugh would demand. Additionally, there are a few destinations with young quarterbacks of their own who are yet to officially move on from their current head coaches. Bill Belichick in New England and Ron Rivera in Washington are both likely going to be let go this offseason. Both situations are closer to (but still ahead of) the Panthers in development than they are the Chargers, but would probably come with the bonus of being able to choose a quarterback rather than inherit one. As the 2024 NFL Draft order currently stands, the Commanders and Patriots own the second and third overall picks respectively. In Washington, Harbaugh might get to pick between UNC products Sam Howell and Drake Maye. In New England, he’d perhaps get the chance to develop 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, or finalists Michael Penix Jr. or Bo Nix. While none of those prospects are viewed with quite the same confidence as the consensus top two of Maye and USC’s Caleb Williams, Harbaugh is confident in his ability to maximize the talent of whoever they draft. If Harbaugh does jump back to the NFL and wants to compete for a Super Bowl from day one, he should join the Chargers.

Knicks could explore reunion with former starting shooting guard ahead of trade deadline

The New York Knicks (19-15) are expected to remain active in trade discussions ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline to fill out their rotation and could ultimately turn to a familiar face for help. Last week’s trade that netted New York forward OG Anunoby cost the team two of its young assets – including guard Immanuel Quickley – creating the need for another ball-handler. According to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, New York is well-positioned to “explore a wide range of names” to address the issue, specifically citing former Knick Alec Burks and Portland Trail Blazers guard Malcolm Brogdon as potential targets. “[The Knicks] have enough draft capital and wiggle room with Evan Fournier’s contract to explore a wide range of names,” Fischer writes, “from former Tom Thibodeau favorite Alec Burks in Detroit to the sturdy Malcolm Brogdon in Portland.” Fischer also mentions Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, a player New York reportedly considered trading for in the 2022 offseason, as another potential trade target. However, Fischer questions Murray’s fit with Jalen Brunson due to the lack of success the one-time All-Star has had in Atlanta with Trae Young, another undersized point guard. While acquiring Murray would give New York the third All-Star caliber talent it has been seeking for several seasons, bringing in a reliable playmaker off the bench could have a greater impact on the current roster. After the departure of Quickley, third-year man Miles McBride is left as the team’s backup point guard. New York inked McBride to a three-year, $13 million deal following last week’s trade, though his career averages of 2.8 points and 1.0 assists raise doubts that he’ll thrive as the second unit’s leading ball-handler. Burks wouldn’t be much of a game-changing addition, but Tom Thibodeau has proven to be loyal to his former players and the current Pistons swingman was a key contributor on the head coach’s first two Knicks teams. The 32-year-old averaged 12.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 130 games for the Knicks from 2020-22, making 44 starts at point guard during the 2021-22 season. Nonetheless, it’s impossible to overlook that Burks has been largely ineffective for the bottom-dwelling Pistons this season, averaging 10.6 points and 1.3 assists. Adding Brogdon, on the other hand, would be an ideal replacement for Quickley. Last season, Brogdon beat out Quickley for the Sixth Man of the Year Award after posting 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game with the Boston Celtics while shooting a career-high 44.4% from three-point range. Playing in an increased role with Portland this season, Brodgon has remained consistent, averaging 15.7 points and 5.6 assists in 26 games, including 16 starts. Even so, while Brogdon is clearly a better option to trade for than Burks, it is possible that he might not end up in New York due to Knicks president Leon Rose’s history as an agent for CAA. Brogdon, 31, is represented by Klutch Sports Group and Rich Paul, who reportedly opposed trading client Zach LaVine to the Knicks in 2022, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. Last month, SNY’s Ian Begley reported that the dynamic between Klutch Sports Group and the team hasn’t changed and that “Paul remains reluctant to do business with the Knicks.” It’s worth noting that Murray is also represented by Klutch, another potential reason he might not be the best target for New York. If either Brogdon or Murray had a desire to play for the Knicks, perhaps his representation would be more accommodating, but there’s no telling whether that would actually be the case.
