Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking for a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

Spurs have done well in the market so far, bringing in Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin early on in the window.

In terms of midfield targets, Tottenham have now reportedly set their sights on a talented 24-year-old who currently plies his trade in Serie A.

Ahead of the January transfer window, The Athletic reported that Tottenham’s desire for a new midfielder was arguably higher than their interest in a new forward.

‘Spurs will probably look to bring in a No 8 but, ideally, they want someone who could also play as a defensive midfielder or in an advanced role,’ they wrote.

With Tottenham being somewhat short in terms of midfield options, particularly now Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are at the Africa Cup of Nations, a new No. 8 would be a good shout.

In addition, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Spurs remains uncertain, although as per the above Sky Sports News report, the Lilywhites are in no rush to make changes in midfield.

Tutto Atalanta recently claimed that the Bergamo outfit is after €35million (around £30million) for their player.

So, who is Ederson and what would he bring to the proverbial table in the Tottenham midfield?

Atalanta’s Ederson – not to be confused with his namesake at Manchester City – has enjoyed a swift rise to prominence since arriving in Europe.

The 24-year-old joined Italian club Salernitana from Brazil’s Corinthians in January 2022, and within six months, he was on the way to Bergamo for around £18million.

He has made 64 competitive appearances for Atalanta, also getting on the scoresheet seven times and registering two assists.

Just today, South American football expert Tim Vickery told Sky Sports News just what kind of player Ederson is, amid links with Newcastle.

“He’s a strong, well-built central midfielder,” he said. “He’s strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box and has a strong personality as well.

“The first thing I remember about him is his professional debut for Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide at the time.

“They were relegated in dreadful form but even in that bad context, he stood out.

“So, a lot of virtues and I just wonder if all these virtues may remind you of another Brazilian already wearing the shirt of Newcastle.

“You could see this either as back-up in the squad to Bruno Guimaraes, or, with Newcastle being under pressure with financial fair play, and potential big-money offers coming in for Bruno Guimaraes, you could see him as a possible replacement.”
