John Hartson says Benjamin Siegrist will be ‘really disappointed’ at how his Celtic career has panned out ahead of a possible exit.

The 31-year-old is Celtic’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Joe Hart and Scott Bain – he has only made the bench once this season.

After signing for Celtic on a high from Dundee United in 2022, there were big things expected of Benjamin Siegrist and what he could possibly bring.

But fast forward to the present and he has only repped the Celtic jersey on just two occasions.

John Hartson shared how he was once ‘performing every week’, but now he finds himself struggling to even make a matchday squad, as he told Go Radio.

There has been talk about the shot-stopper leaving this month – but, unfortunately for the player, those talks have broken down.

On the first-team front, he isn’t going to earn any minutes under Brendan Rodgers, so you would imagine the club will be looking to still part ways with him before the window slams shut.

Either way, when Benjamin Siegrist does head for the exit door, John Hartson feels it will be full of disappointment.

“I think it has been incredibly disappointing for him,” said Hartson. “A lot of clubs. I wouldn’t say every club. But he was on a lot of club’s radar when he was at Dundee United. Performing every single week.

“People were saying ‘wow, he is coming Dundee United in games. He’s a brilliant shot-stopper. A brilliant goalkeeper’.

“Celtic went and snapped him up and he has hardly kicked a ball, which from his own point of view, he will be really, really disappointed.

“He will be thinking ‘yes, I have gone to Celtic. I have doubled or trebled my wages, but I am in a situation where I want to go and play football’. Now he will have the opportunity to leave Celtic.”

Celtic’s search for a goalkeeper

Come the summer, there might just be wholesale changes to Celtic’s goalkeeping department.

Both Hart and Bain are out of contract in the summer, with Siegrist’s current deal expiring in 2026.

There has been talk of a new goalkeeper arriving, but unless one of the above three agrees to become or remain as back-up, then more than one keeper might just arrive.

Some thought Celtic might just be pro-active by doing something in January, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now.
