Alasdair Gold makes intriguing statement about Alfie Devine and Lucas Bergvall at Spurs

Alasdair Gold has stated that he is awaiting word on how Alfie Devine’s future at the North London team may be affected by Lucas Bergvall’s signing to Tottenham.

Over the past six months, Bergvall has established himself as one of Swedish football’s top young players. In January, he completed a deadline-day transfer to Tottenham.

According to Expressen, Spurs reportedly paid Djurgarden an initial cost of £8.4 million, with the potential fee increasing to £16.4 million if certain performance-related add-ons are fulfilled.

The 18-year-old, who was sent back to Djurgarden on loan until the end of the season, stated in his first interview on the official Tottenham channel that he is eager to be back with the Lilywhites, calling them a “young, hungry team.”

He might perhaps be competing for a place in Tottenham’s first-team squad with another teenage midfield starlet in the form of Devine.

Could Alfie Devine have to fight Bergvall for his place?

The youngster has been loaned out to Plymouth Argyle in order to test himself in the Championship after impressing for Port Vale in the first half of the season, and Gold believes that the England Under-20 international is quite similar to Bergvall.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “I’m intrigued to see if Devine and Bergvall can both fit into this team next season because there was a lot of hope that Devine would come in next season and push as a real Maddison understudy, but Bergvall is that kind of player as well.”

I do not see Bergvall and Devine competing for the same place as the former is much more of a box-to-box player while the latter is more of a number eight/ten, who would want to play closer to goal.

Devine could be used in rotation with Maddison and perhaps even the wide players while the Swedish starlet will compete with the likes of Bentancur and Sarr.
