Alasdair Gold shares what he’s hearing about Rodrigo Bentancur from within Tottenham
Journalist Alasdair Gold has shared when people inside Tottenham Hotspur believe fans will get to see the best of Rodrigo Bentancur again as he continues to make his way back to full fitness.
It has been a turbulent 12 months for Rodrigo Bentancur. He was one of the only positives about last season, scoring five Premier League goals before his campaign ended prematurely due to injury.
Tottenham fans received a massive boost when the Uruguayan returned to the squad in late October. But his comeback did not last long as Bentancur was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge from Matty Cash a month later.
Rodrigo Bentancur not expected to rediscover best form for Tottenham until next season
There were concerns that Bentancur would be missing until February. However, once again, the 26-year-old stunned everyone by playing against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve.
Bentancur has produced a couple of brilliant performances since his return. But there have also been signs that he is not yet back at the peak of his powers.
Tottenham will seemingly not be concerned however. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold suggested that the expectation that it may still be some time before he returns to the levels he was previously at.
“From what I understand from people within the club, as he was going through his rehabilitation and getting towards the end of it, there was this feeling last year that you weren’t going to see the best version of Rodrigo Bentancur until next season, so the 24/25 season,” he said.

“And that’s not particularly down to him, that is purely because when you’ve had a serious, long-term injury, your body needs to rebuild itself. And it’s almost like the player has to re-educate themselves on all the things that were natural and instinctive, because they just haven’t done it for so long, or they’ve barely done it.”
Spurs no longer need the Uruguayan to save them
A lot has changed about Tottenham since Bentancur was sidelined. Antonio Conte departed and a miserable season came to a much-needed end.
Ange Postecoglou has breathed fresh life into the club. And Tottenham are now flying high. Their supporters certainly now have reason to be incredibly excited about what their future holds.
So that takes some of the pressure off of Bentancur at this stage of his comeback. Tottenham seem to have a number of players who can help them find a way to win from any situation.
And while Bentancur is clearly desperate to give everything he can to help the cause, perhaps having his load lightened will prove to be exactly what he needs.
