Get to know your 40-man Blue Jays better: Kevin Gausman

Before the 2022 season, the Jays inked Kevin Gausman to a $100 million, five-year contract. He has made 62 starts, recorded a 3.25 ERA in 359.2 innings, 442 strikeouts, and 6.5 bWAR in the two seasons we’ve had him.

He’s a fascinating man. He had a lot of promise prior to his age-30 season, but it wasn’t regularly displayed. He threw in 203 games and 164 starts before to his 30 season, accumulating an 11.6 bWAR across 8 seasons with a 4.26 ERA (almost a 100 ERA+).

He has made 95 starts at age 30 and older with a 3.10 ERA (a 132 ERA+), 669 strikeouts in 551.2 innings, and an 11.7 bWAR.

He has won the Cy Young award in each of the seasons he has been above thirty (he never won the award before turning thirty).

Since the Jays are paying Gausman for the next three seasons, I’m hoping that he will age nicely, as pitchers who turn around their careers after the age of thirty tend to do.
