In a significant development for the Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball program, guard Jalen Warley, who donned jersey number 7, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. This move comes shortly after the unexpected retirement of longtime head coach Tony Bennett, signaling a period of transition for the team.

 

Warley, a 6-foot-7 guard, joined Virginia in May 2024 after spending three seasons at Florida State University. During his tenure with the Seminoles, he averaged 7.5 points, 2.8 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game in his junior year, showcasing his versatility and defensive prowess. His experience in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) made him a valuable addition to the Cavaliers’ roster.

 

The decision to transfer was influenced by the abrupt retirement of Coach Bennett on October 18, 2024. Bennett’s departure activated a 30-day window allowing Virginia players to enter the transfer portal. Warley utilized this opportunity, entering the portal just eight days before the season opener against Campbell. He plans to redshirt the 2024-25 season, preserving a year of eligibility for the 2025-26 campaign.

 

Warley’s initial commitment to Virginia was part of a strategic effort by the Cavaliers to bolster their lineup through the transfer portal. He was among five notable transfers, including ex-Duke forward TJ Power, former Kansas State guard Dai Dai Ames, and San Diego State’s Elijah Saunders. These acquisitions aimed to enhance Virginia’s competitiveness in the ACC.

 

The Cavaliers were projected to finish fifth in the ACC according to CBS Sports’ preseason preview. However, Bennett’s retirement and Warley’s subsequent departure have introduced uncertainties regarding the team’s performance.

 

Interim head coach Ron Sanchez, previously an assistant under Bennett, now faces the challenge of maintaining team cohesion and performance amidst these changes. Sophomore center Blake Buchanan expressed the team’s resolve, stating, “It’s definitely unfortunate, losing a coach like him… But I think as a team we’ve done a great job. We’ve really come together… We’ve got to do it for each other.”
